Tools I Recommend to Set Up CAPI, Enhanced Conversions & Advanced Tracking

In the competitive landscape of PPC advertising, precise conversion tracking isn't just beneficial—it's essential.

By Joel Bondorowsky

Without accurate data, optimizing campaigns becomes guesswork, leading to wasted ad spend and missed opportunities. Advanced tracking methods like Meta’s CAPI, Google Ads Enhanced Conversions, and LinkedIn’s Conversions API provide deeper insights into user behavior, enabling better optimization and higher ROI.

Recommended Tools and What They’re For

  • Meta Business Manager – Required for Meta CAPI setup.
  • Google Ads – For Enhanced Conversions using the Ads pixel.
  • Google Tag Manager (Web & Server-Side) – To manage tracking tags and send events server-side.
  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) – Hosts your server-side GTM container.
  • GA4 (Google Analytics 4) – Highly recommended for insights, audience building, and backup measurement.
  • LinkedIn Campaign Manager – To configure LinkedIn Conversions API.
  • Postman / DevTools / Debugging Tools – For testing and validating tracking setups.
  • Consent Management Platforms (CMPs) – Ensure compliance (e.g., OneTrust, Cookiebot).

Setting Up Meta’s Conversions API (CAPI)

  1. Meta Business Manager Setup:
    • Create and verify your Business Manager and Ads Account.
    • Generate your Pixel in Events Manager.
    • Use Graph API Explorer to test tokens.
  2. Google Tag Manager Configuration:
    • Set up a Web container for browser events.
    • Configure a Server-side container hosted on Google Cloud Run.
    • Route server events using event_id for deduplication.
  3. Cloud Infrastructure:
    • Set up a GCP billing account and Cloud Run instance.
    • Optionally map a custom domain (e.g., gtm.yourdomain.com).

Implementing Google Ads Enhanced Conversions (Using the Ads Pixel)

Enhanced Conversions supplement your Google Ads pixel with first-party data (like email or phone) to improve tracking even when cookies are limited.

  1. Google Ads Setup:
    • Set up a conversion action in Google Ads.
    • Enable “Enhanced Conversions” in the conversion settings.
  2. Google Tag Manager (Web):
    • Use the standard Google Ads Conversion Tracking tag.
    • Enable Enhanced Conversions in the tag settings.
    • Pass hashed customer data using variables or custom JavaScript.
  3. Test & Validate:
    • Use Tag Assistant and Google Ads diagnostics tools to verify setup.

Why GA4 Still Matters

  • Cross-channel attribution
  • Deep behavioral insights
  • Backup measurement in case of pixel loss
  • Server-side event forwarding (future-proofing)
  • Audience building for remarketing — GA4 lets you create detailed remarketing lists based on user behavior and share them with Google Ads.

Set up a GA4 property and stream events through GTM. Use it to monitor full-funnel performance and supplement your attribution model.

Setting Up LinkedIn’s Conversions API

  1. Campaign Manager Configuration:
    • Go to “Measurement” > “Conversion Tracking.”
    • Create a new conversion with the “Conversions API” method.
  2. Integration:
    • Choose Direct API or Partner Integration (e.g., LeadsBridge).
    • Use access tokens and LinkedIn’s documentation to connect server events.
  3. Validation:
    • Use LinkedIn’s tester and monitor data in Campaign Manager.
