From SEO to AI Surfaceability: Why Getting Talked About Beats Getting Linked

By Joel Bondorowsky

Google-era SEO is fading. AI search engines don’t just index websites—they recommend answers. And the brands they recommend? The ones people are already talking about. Here’s how to stay discoverable when 10 blue links become one AI-generated answer.

We’re living through the biggest shift in digital visibility since the dawn of Google. It’s the shift from Search Engine Optimization to AI Surfaceability.

In the old world, SEO meant optimizing your site so a human searching Google would find your page, click your link, and (hopefully) convert. Rankings were king. Keywords, backlinks, site speed—those were the usual suspects.

But that world is going away. Rapidly.

Today, more and more people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini instead of Googling. These tools don’t give 10 blue links. They recommend 1 or 2 answers. In this new system, AI becomes the filter.

And in this new world, the game changes.

You’re not just optimizing for visibility. Now, you’re optimizing for credibility. You’re not just trying to be indexed. Instead, you’re trying to be trusted enough to be surfaced by the AI.

Why Social Signals Now Drive AI Discovery

Here’s the key insight: AI engines pay attention to social signals.

They scan Reddit threads, X posts, TikTok captions, Amazon reviews, YouTube transcripts, and LinkedIn carousels. These engines index not just structured content but also the messy, real conversations happening across the web.

That means your brand’s social footprint is no longer just a nice-to-have. Instead, it’s now a ranking factor for AI search.

1. Social = Recency + Relevance

When people talk about you online—especially in public, time-stamped channels—AI reads that as a fresh, relevant signal. As a result, you’re not just credible; you’re also current.

2. Authenticity Is Harder to Fake

AI is starting to ignore thin content and SEO fluff. On the other hand, it’s much harder to fake real TikTok reactions, customer tweets, Reddit love, or LinkedIn shoutouts. These are higher-trust signals.

3. Mentions > Backlinks

Backlinks still matter. However, in the AI context, a brand that’s mentioned in dozens of real conversations beats one with sterile backlinks and no social proof.

4. Distributed Presence Wins

A site with perfect technical SEO but no social presence? That’s risky. A brand mentioned across Reddit, TikTok, X, YouTube, and LinkedIn? That’s a safer bet. AI likes what feels human, messy, and multi-sourced.

5. Buzz Boosts Surfaceability

AI engines are starting to replicate what Google did with trending content. They weigh what’s buzzing. So, if your brand is part of the conversation, you’re more likely to be surfaced.

What Marketers Need to Do Now

  • Prioritize public conversations. Create content that sparks comments, reactions, stitches, retweets, duets, and threads.
  • Encourage real mentions. Incentivize customers, creators, and users to talk about your product in their own voice.
  • Diversify platforms. Don’t just blog. Be on Reddit, X, TikTok, and LinkedIn. Different channels mean different audiences—and more AI signals.
  • Track surfaceability, not just traffic. Start asking: “Would an AI trust this enough to mention it?”

The future of SEO isn’t purely technical. It’s deeply social.

If you’re not being talked about, you’re not getting found.
